Happenstance

Yielding to the enchantment:

Blame it on the dim hope that

Existence is more than daily toil

Ending in a cold final nowhere.

A long life: your reward for years

Well spent? Or just a further lap in the

Long dodge past disease, turmoil, war,

Happenstance, and homicidal rage?

Said the old survivor in his cups:

Staying in the fight is an exercise in

Masochism, hypocrisy, and futility

I would not care to repeat.

Then enchantment be damned.

Re-entrenchment it must be.

Let us withdraw to the bunkers.

Let us get on with the dreary slog of life.
