Literally the meaning of life refers to plants and animals that are considered organic material: Entities that grow, reproduce and function.  The alternative to life is death.  All monotheistic religions define God as a negative presence.  Since he is not discernable as an organic entity he must be imagined.  He exists only in the imagination.  Death as the absence of life must also be imagined.  Conversely we tend to think of life as the absence of death.  An individual, therefore, gets to imagine or create her own “meaning of life.”  I tend to think of my life, as an individual, as being defined in terms of the effect my organic presence has on other living entities in my community or ecosystem.  I am what I eat but more importantly I am what I effect.
