The Muppet Show - Harvey Korman

Updated: Feb 18, 2021

In season 1, episode 10 of The Muppet Show, featuring Harvey Korman, Kermit the Frog whimsically attempts to address the question "What is the meaning of life?" To which Harvey responds "I feel that life is a great deal like a tennis game."

This inevitably leads to an argument between the group on whether or not life is like tennis game, with Miss Piggy insisting that life is not like a tennis game. While another panelist states "Life is a garbage dump if you want the truth." The group unable to stay on topic digresses into random conversations about life, before abruptly all together exclaiming at the end of the segment "That's Life!" Overall, the show segment is only about 2-3 minutes long and doesn't go any further in depth philosophically. But one important insight that we gain from the episode is that we learn that yes, frogs do ask the big questions contrary to popular belief. Like other shows, it tackles the question via comedy.

On a side note, there is actually a book called Tennis and the Meaning of Life: A Literary Anthology of the Game. So, what do you think? Is life like a tennis game? Do we just bat a ball back and forth over a net within the boundaries drawn on the ground? Or is there more to tennis... life?
