In season 1 the pilot episode of the TV show Raising Hope, Jimmy Chance begins to question what is his purpose in life after a bad day at work. So he goes home determined to come up with a life plan, which he creates... shown below.
As life would have it, that day Jimmy meets a woman who just happens to be a crazed psychopath killer. But he doesn't know and he ends up sleeping with her. She ends up in jail, his life goes on. 9 months later, he finds out he has a baby.
His mother attempts to convince him that he is not cut out to be a father after the first day. However, he concludes in the end "I want people to look at me differently. Alright, I'm sick of people looking at me like I don't have a purpose. I want people to look at me like that baby looks at me. Like I'm someone special. This is a chance for me to do something good."
Children can give us meaning. It is as simple as that.
